MOTs in Rugby, Daventry and Northampton

When searching for reliable and trusted MOTs in Rugby and the surrounding area, Townsends of Rugby delivers transparent results at cost-effective prices to ensure that your vehicle is road-legal.

How do MOTs work?

If your car is older than three years, it’s a legal requirement set by the DVSA to have an MOT carried out by a professional who will confirm that your vehicle is roadworthy.

Following a set criteria from lights to seatbelts, wipers to emissions, the comprehensive inspection ensures that it is fit for purpose, isn’t producing a large amount of harmful emissions and will keep you and others safe.

It’s not guaranteed that every vehicle will pass an MOT test and if yours does fail you’ll receive feedback on which elements are major or dangerous faults which need to be fixed by a qualified garage who will then be able to perform a re-test following the same procedure.

Our MOT process

Every MOT carried out is done by an individual whom the DVSA has accredited. Unlike having your car serviced which checks the overall mechanical condition of your vehicle, an MOT is much more thorough.

Whether you’ve got a vehicle that is 20 years old, or a modern electric car that’s just passed its three-year mark, all MOTs have the same process – but of course, there’s no need to check emissions on an electric car because of its environmentally friendly assets.

The first port of call is to know when your vehicle is due for an MOT and have one scheduled with a reputable garage in advance.

If you’re driving on UK roads without an up-to-date MOT certificate then you’re breaking the law and could face a fine.

Once you have an MOT booked you’ll need to bring in necessary documents such as the vehicle’s registration document (V5C), previous MOT certificate if you’ve had one carried out before, along with any service history records.

The vehicle will then be inspected to a high standard with your dedicated inspector providing the outcomes of whether it has passed or failed the test.

Once passed, your certificate is valid for one year and it’s essential to note down the date of expiry ready for the following year.

MOT FAQs

When do I need to get an MOT test?

For vehicles over three years old, an MOT can be booked up to 28 days before its first scheduled test or from the date shown on your previous certificate.

In doing so your MOT will be valid for 13 months as you don’t need to worry about losing any days for taking the car in early as we understand that schedules are busy and you want to get it done at a time which is convenient to you.

However, it’s a must that the vehicle does pass its test before the expiry date otherwise it won’t be road-worthy, you could be fined up to £1,000 and if the car is deemed ‘dangerous’ then you may have to pay a fine of up to £2,500 and face three points on your licence.

What is included in an MOT?

Vehicle identification number, registration plate, lights, steering and suspension, wipers and washer bottle, windscreen, horn, seatbelts, seats, fuel system, emissions, bodywork, doors, mirrors, wheel and tyres, as well as brakes.

Is an MOT a lengthy process?

Despite the amount of areas that need to be assessed, rest assured that an MOT check will only take between 45 minutes to one hour. During that time you’re welcome to stay on-site at the garage or pick up later in the day once completed.

Courtesy Cars

If you’re wondering which MOT test centre near you is best for your circumstances, rest assured that Townsends of Rugby make the process nice and simple.

We understand that your car plays an important role in your day-to-day life, and when it needs to have an MOT carried out, this inconvenience can bring complications especially if repairs need to be made.

That’s why we offer a hire car service and can also supply a courtesy car if on the rare occasion your vehicle is off the road for more than a day in which a vehicle will always be offered to help you with essential daily tasks.
